Replacing the Furnace Ignitor

We’ve all heard the sound of the furnace turning on, you know on those cold days when you stand near the vent waiting to feel the warm air blow through. You hear the fan turn on and then wait to hear the air start circulating but nothing happens. Where is the warm air? Your furnace isn’t igniting a flame. So what now? Replace the furnace ignitor. These need to be replaced every 5-10 years. Not to worry, replacing the ignitor is easy. Below are step-by-step instructions on what to do.

Shut Off Electricity & Gas to the Furnace

Before starting work on your furnace, switch the electric power off and cut off the gas source. Make sure the area is well-ventilated, well-lit, and in a safe environment.

Locate Ignitor

The ignitor can be found near the center of the burners but could also be in the sealed burner compartment. You will need to disassemble the compartment cover to get to the ignitor. It’s pretty easy.

Remove Ignitor

Once you have found the ignitor, unscrew it. Loosen the screws first to see if it budges, if not, unscrew all the way and keep track of the screw.

New Ignitor

You might need to find the proper replacement at a local wholesaler. Be sure to have the mounting bracket and electrical connector for comparison. You will also need the furnace brand and model number to ensure you get the correct replacement ignitor on the first trip. Installing the new ignitor is just as easy as removing it because you screw it on just as you screwed it off.

Power on

Once the ignitor is in place and the screw is tightened well, the power can be turned back on and the gas source reconnected. Don’t forget to replace the compartment covers if you needed to remove them to get to the ignitor. The ignition should light and glow now. Be ready to feel that warm air flowing through those vents.
